10 Plants for beginners

If you have ever failed to look after a cactus properly or overwatered a succulent, let me assure you, you are definitely not alone.

Here is what we will do. I am going to pick out a few plants for those of you who tend to be a bit forgetful when it comes to plant care. And no, this is not slow gardening.

To actually kill one of these plants, you would have to do a lot, and I mean a lot, of things wrong. I will split them into two groups. It does not really mean anything, but it might read better than just chucking ten names in a list.

Let us start by chatting about the Snake Plant, ZZ Plant (no, not ZZ Top), Pothos, Spider Plant and the Peace Lily.

Snake Plant

This one is super easygoing and barely asks for anything in return. Not fussed about low light, not bothered by lack of water. There are reports saying these plants can go over a month without water and still look absolutely fine. Chill plant.

ZZ Plant

This is the kind of plant that, if you forget about it for a few weeks, it will still be exactly where you left it looking exactly the same. Loyal. Low maintenance. Brilliant.

Pothos

These grow just about anywhere, in almost any condition. They grow quickly too, and with little to no effort from your side. True story, one I planted once got huge in no time. I cut a piece off, chucked it in a glass of water just to see what would happen… and boom. Roots in no time.

Spider Plant

Needs a tiny bit more care, not for itself really, but for where you place it. It sends out loads of baby plants, and wherever those land, another plant will grow. If you overwater it, it might complain a bit but nothing dramatic.

Peace Lily

This is the one people make videos about. If you forget to water it, it will look dramatically dead, like you really messed up. But throw water on it, like you are waking it up with a splash in the face, and five minutes later it is back like nothing happened. It is known as the Drama Queen that forgives quickly. Lol.

Now let us talk about the other five. Again, I did not split them this way for any particular reason. None is better than the others, and this is not a strong plant ranking. Haha.

Next up are Aloe Vera, Cast Iron Plant, Jade Plant, Lucky Bamboo and the Rubber Plant.

You have heard of them, right?

Aloe Vera

If you have ever had a burn, chances are someone’s nan or some countryside aunt told you to rub Aloe Vera on it. But in general, plant it somewhere with light and forget about it. It sorts itself out.

Cast Iron Plant and Jade Plant

These two are tanks (and the names give it away). They do not care about much, stay quietly in their corner, and just want a bit of water every now and then. Every now and then. No stress.

Lucky Bamboo

Not actually bamboo, you know that right? But it is not offended. It is a type of Dracaena. Just plop it in water and off it goes. Good luck indeed.

Rubber Plant

This one wants a bit of light, even indirect is fine. Water it now and then. Forget it for a bit, it does not mind. But do not go overboard either. The result? It is always there, looking good with barely any effort.

I seriously doubt you will lose any of these. You will be able to say you have loads of plants at home and the best part is, even if you forget about them, they will still be there waiting for you. It is a great way to practise and the perfect start for anyone who wants to eventually move on to plants that need a bit more love.
